Name

Hogwarts | Ages 6-10 & 9-13

Description

June 17-21 (skip Wed, June 19) | 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM | $145

Learn to wield a wand, practice some of the basics of Quidditch, avoid Boggarts and Dementors. This camp will keep students creatively engaged while exploring the world of Hogwarts. We may visit Hogsmeade Village, study abroad at the American school, Ilvermorney, or even try to recapture some escaped Fantastic Beasts. So much to do and so little time (but we have time-turners so we can all have even more fun)! This class is best enjoyed by students who have read or watched at the least Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (the first book/movie of the series).

Activity Based Camp

Explore the process of theatre training through high-energy theatre games, improvisation, and creative activities. Develop characters, explore dramatic interpretation of classic stories, learn lingo, challenge your imagination, and hone projection and articulation skills while engaging the body in purposeful physical expression.

Studying theatre can offer numerous benefits to a child's development, both personally and academically.

  • Communication Skills: Acting helps children develop strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills. They learn to express themselves clearly, use body language effectively, and articulate emotions.
  • Creativity and Imagination: Acting encourages creativity and imagination. Children learn to think outside the box, explore different perspectives, and develop a heightened sense of imagination, which can be valuable in various aspects of life.
  • Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Through portraying different characters, children gain a better understanding of human emotions and different perspectives. This can enhance their empathy and emotional intelligence, improving their ability to relate to others.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Acting often involves working with others to solve problems, whether it's figuring out how to stage a scene or collaborating with fellow actors. This can enhance a child's teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical Expression: Acting involves using the body as a tool for expression. This can improve a child's physical coordination, awareness of body language, and overall physical expression.
  • Life Skills: Many of the skills learned in acting are transferable to other areas of life. Whether it's building confidence, developing strong communication skills, or learning to work effectively in a team, these skills can benefit a child in various personal and professional contexts.

This is an activity-based camp (as opposed to performance focused). We have discovered that many children don’t do well with repetitious rehearsals—it just isn’t fun! Teachers will still collect video moments of students participating in activities throughout the week and create a Video Week-Book to share with parents at the end (a Vimeo Link that you can share with distant family and download to keep forever), but the focus will not be spending hours just rehearsing for a show.  Camp will still include theatre skills listed above and take our inspiration for exploration from the camp theme, but the goal will be to keep the children engaged and having fun rather than polishing for a performance.

(It is fine to take the same “theme” more than once, since the activities will naturally change with each camp week, it will feel like a whole new experience for repeating students!)
Students are asked to wear clothing they are comfortable moving in, shoes that stay on their feet and cover their toes, and to bring water bottles labelled with their name.

**Please provide a nut-free snack and beverage for your child.**
