This class is suitable for students who participate in SCCT's Intermediate or Studio level classes (or the equivalent training elsewhere-please email traysie@scchildrenstheatre.org for approval). Monologues are standard requirements for application to theatre arts programs (Fine Arts Center, Governor’s School and colleges) and auditions for many shows. We are here to give that work an edge! Work though moment before, character details, tactics and rehearsal techniques that encourage discovery and creativity. In addition to performance, we will address self-taping, appropriate attire, and what to generally expect at an SCCT audition.
Before the first day of class: Students must select a 1-minute piece from a published play they would like to work on, send it to traysie@scchildrenstheatre.org as a PDF, and be fully memorized at the first class. (It is also helpful to read the whole play that the piece is selected from.) If you have contrasting pieces you need to work on, send both. Students should plan to bring a pencil, notebook, a folder in which to keep handouts and water in a closed container. Clothes in which we can move and shoes that stay securely on feet is essential attire for this and most theatre arts classes.
Coming into this class “audition-ready” with a memorized piece will allow us to spend the entirety of our time trying a variety of approaches to polish the final product. Working the piece in different ways will build confidence in a way that should make the execution in an actual audition memorable. Skills are easily transferrable to future work so students can craft the perfect audition each time they develop a new piece.
